SECRETS OF SECURING AN AIRLINE UPGRADE REVEALEDAirline upgrades - the perfect start or end to any trip, but almost mythical strokes of good fortune which only seem to happen to other people. So if it’s not us getting upgraded, exactly who is it? Research published by leading online travel service Expedia.co.uk reveals the secrets behind securing more leg room, better food and free drinks: you should be a polite, well-dressed, middle-aged man from the South East of England and seek out a check-in staff member of a similar age. Despite half of the travelling population (48%) admitting that the best policy is ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get’, just one in five (20%) of us have ever been upgraded. The research showed that: - Men are 50% more likely to be upgraded than women
- Travellers aged between 45-54 stand the most chance of success
- People from the South East are 1.5 times more likely than the UK average
- Being well-dressed and polite when checking-in results in 50% more upgrades than pure luck and holding a frequent flyer card put together
- And a third of people (34%) found their charm worked best on staff of a similar age
But as a nation of increasingly frequent flyers travellers, many members of the travelling public are prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to secure the invitation to first or business class:- One in five (19%) have pretended to have a leg injury
- One in eight (13%) tried bribing check-in staff, including one traveller who went as far as baking a cake!
- One in ten (12%) claimed to be rich and / or famous
- And one in 20 (6%) even went as far as to say they were pregnant
“At Expedia we try our best to offer people their perfect trip, but even we can’t promise upgrades,” said Dermot Halpin, managing director of Expedia.co.uk. “As the boss of the UK’s leading online travel agent I have to travel a fair bit myself, but as an Irishman in my 30s I’m not holding my breath.” | |
