Sale is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, in
Greater Manchester, England.
Lying beside the River Mersey, Sale is located 10 km. (6 miles) south-west of
Manchester City Centre and has a population of around 52,000.
Sale is neighboured by the towns of Altrincham and Stretford and is within
the historic county boundaries of Cheshire.
Sale has a long history, dating back to at least the 12th century.
The town of Sale was a small farming and weaving community, until it grew
into a Manchester commuter town with the arrival of the Bridgewater Canal in
1765 and the railway in 1849.
